Wave Crest Ruby Blend

One Good Turn

Once in awhile, things don’t go as planned, but in a round-about way, they often turn out to surprise us with the outcome. Such is the story of this wine, which began as two different wines that would not finish their fermentations. Both had incredible flavors, but had just a little sugar left over that the yeast did not use. So, we decided to blend them up: here is our Ruby blend, made from Sangiovese, Riesling and Chasselas Doré.

This wine began in the vineyards, of three distinct regions: Sangiovese came off the slopes of Red Mountain, the Riesling from the higher elevation field of the Crawford family and the Chasselas Dorè from the Nooksack Valley of Northwest Washington. Red Mountain creates ripe flavors, with low acidity, higher elevation Yakima Valley Riesling has good clean fruit flavors and the cool Nooksack emphasizes acidity and citrus qualities.

Winemaking played a pivotal role in this wine however; what to do with a Sangiovese that has great flavor, but too much sugar left after fermentation? Many afternoons were spent with our staff doing trial blends of these three wines, till a wonderfully crafted wine emerged.

Flavors abound in this wine, with strawberry from the Sangiovese, lemon from the Chasselas and peach from the Riesling. This profile, with just a hint of sweetness, makes a great sipping wine as well as a wine that will pair well with harvest season foods, such as those that are common at a traditional Thanksgiving meal. You will also enjoy the beautiful rosé color of this wine, like an autumnal sunset.
